Originally settled in the 1880’s, the town was originally known as Jack’s Neck, briefly being renamed Belle Port before landing finally on the name Belhaven in 1899. Once serving as a bustling industrial town, half a dozen lumber companies used the nearby Pamlico River and Sound along with the nearby branch of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad to transport logs across the country in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, Belhaven serves as a peaceful haven for recreational boating and fishing, with those same waters yielding a variety of fish, crabs, shrimp, and oysters.
